Modern life has no shortage of stressors. Sitting in bumper‐to‐bumper traffic, watching the evening news, even a text message alert is enough to trigger a stress response. Whatever the cause, stress can add up quickly and have debilitating effects on your health. Repeated stress is known to cause wear and tear to accumulate in your organs, tissues and body systems. Known as “allostatic load,” it can result in a cycle of chronic pain, stress and more pain.
According to the publication Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education and Research, “The negative emotional [parallels] of chronic pain frequently become more apparent the longer pain persists, even for individuals who wish to be 'positive.' For example, emotional distress may be compounded as pain interferes with work, with important social and recreational activities, and with family and social relations.”
