Stress Relief Benefits of a Swim Spa

Modern life has no shortage of stressors. Sitting in bumper‐to‐bumper traffic, watching the evening news, even a text message alert is enough to trigger a stress response. Whatever the cause, stress can add up quickly and have debilitating effects on your health. Repeated stress is known to cause wear and tear to accumulate in your organs, tissues and body systems. Known as “allostatic load,” it can result in a cycle of chronic pain, stress and more pain.

According to the publication Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education and Research, “The negative emotional [parallels] of chronic pain frequently become more apparent the longer pain persists, even for individuals who wish to be 'positive.' For example, emotional distress may be compounded as pain interferes with work, with important social and recreational activities, and with family and social relations.”

As a remedy, heated water, steam and massage have been used for thousands of years to promote physical and mental well‐being. From the Orient to Europe, hot springs and other forms of water therapy have been used to restore mental, emotional and physical balance. Modern authorities agree that a variety of diseases and injuries are indirectly improved by the relaxing effect of immersion in water.

For example, in the context of defining hydrotherapy, The Encyclopedia Britannica comments, “Wet heat helps relieve pain and improves circulation; it also promotes relaxation and rest and, in some mental disturbances, may be used to calm an agitated and hyperactive individual.” Interestingly, the English word disease (or, “dis‐ease”) means “a lack of ease.” So by reducing the symptoms of stress, hydrotherapy helps to restore the body’s natural equilibrium and may reduce the potential for certain stress‐related diseases. Owning a swim spa gives you daily access to these relaxing properties. And you can supplement the relaxation further by adding spa therapies such as aromatherapy, chromotherapy and music therapy.

Relaxation is especially beneficial for women. Women’s health experts highlight specific biological stressors like premenstrual syndrome, post‐partum depression and menopause. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, “Studies show that women are more likely than men to experience symptoms of stress,” adding that “women who are stressed are more likely… to experience depression and anxiety.” Evidently, “Experts do not fully know the reason for the differences, but it may be related to how men’s and women’s bodies process stress hormones.” Serious health risks related to stress include breast and ovarian cancer.

Whatever your gender, it is vital to manage the symptoms of stress. Otherwise, your quality of life will suffer and it may even reduce your lifespan.
